Man Tortured for Singing Too Loud in Church Isn't it wonderful how Americans, when they're hearing what they want to hear, can be totally oblivious to what is actually going on around them? Among my recent favorites of our propaganda ministry's sound-bites was one that featured one of the military's pet journalists stumbling around in an otherwise empty "designated prison" in Baghdad, interviewing people he had assembled for the obvious purpose of selling their sob-sister routines to the viewing public. There was one particularly entertaining guy who was, essentially, claiming that he had been imprisoned and tortured for singing too loud in church. (I believe the exact phrase he used was "praying too much.") Yeah, right, and the guy on the hook next to him was in for helping a little old lady across the street. What bothered me the most, however, was that this guy was just a little too well dressed, looked entirely too well fed, and had somewhat too "military" a haircut for his story to be credible. Come to think of it, none of the guys that the "military-industrial journalist" had gathered to cry on our viewing shoulder looked overly abused to me. It would
appear, that the UN's old "Oil for Food" program has been replaced
with George Bush's new "Lies for Food" program? i.e. You tell
us what we want to hear, and we'll pat you on the head and toss you a
nice little treat. With visions of book deals, movie rights and appearances
on Oprah dancing in their heads, Iraqis will be queuing up by the millions
to see who can tell the biggest whopper to the news media. As a matter
of fact, within a week it will probably be next to impossible to find
anyone in Iraq who wasn't a "victim" of (whatever sells the
most commercials). |
